The "Ilha Grande", "Big Island" in English, located in the South coast of the state of Rio, on Angra dos Reis' bay, had for a long time its name associated to hell, although it is a paradise.
In the 19th century, it was the place where the people with contagious illnesses were taken to. In the 20th century, it became a prison for political prisoners, the ones against the Brazilian dictatorship.
In the 80s, it was changed to a prison where the worst outlaws of Rio's slums went to.
Fortunately, in 1994, the prison was closed, increasing the number of tourists attracted by bays of prystine waters, preserved Atlantic forest, waterfalls, beaches, trekking and diving.
There are about forty resting places on the island that attract more and more couples that want to enjoy a romantic weekend. The boats are the only way of transportation because the entrance of cars isn't still allowed.
